Description
Tupu Ora - 'Tupu’ meaning to grow, flourish, nourish and ‘Ora’ meaning to be well, recover, maintain wellbeing - is the regional specialist eating disorders service in Tāmaki Makaurau.
Our service includes a multidisciplinary team who provide specialist assessment, treatment, and support for individuals experiencing eating disorders across the region. We work in collaboration with local health providers (including hospitals and GP practices), families/whānau, schools, and community services to ensure timely, compassionate, and evidence‑based care.
Under Tupu Ora there are two primary areas within the continuum of eating disorders care: Tupu Ora Community and Tupu Ora Residence (or Eating Disorders Unit; EDU).
Tupu Ora Community
- Our community catchment includes all of the Auckland Metro region including Waitematā, Te Toka Tumai Auckland and Counties Manukau. We work alongside all major hospitals in Auckland (Starship Children's Hospital, North Shore Hospital, Auckland City Hospital and Middlemore Hospital).
- We accept referrals for Auckland residents presenting with moderate to severe eating disorders.
- Our outpatient team includes both child and adolescent and adult pathways.
- The child and adolescent continuum works alongside rangatahi and whānau, using evidence based treatments including the Family Based Therapy (FBT) approach.
- The adult team sees whai i te ora 18 years and over, providing a range of treatments adapted to the individual's needs which may include assessment, group treatment or other interventions. The team utilises evidence-based approaches and therapies to work alongside whai i te ora on their recovery journey.
- Our teams also work alongside other services in a consultation and liaison model where another treating team (such as primary community mental health, CADS, or other specialist MH service) is delivering the primary treatment while Tupu Ora provide an adjunct or other support to the treating team re: eating difficulties.
- Tupu Ora's consultation and liaison pathway supports the primary and secondary sector through providing consultation and advice, 2nd opinion assessments, training and supervision for the Midlands, Metro Auckland and Northland Regions.

Tupu Ora Residential (Eating Disorder Unit)

- The treatment programme includes: support having regular meals with trained staff, therapy groups facilitated by an occupational therapist and psychologist, weekly reviews of progress with members of the MDT and around the clock nursing support.

We request that referrers provide comprehensive medical and psychosocial information to support referrals for suspected eating disorders.

Please note that on occasion there may be a wait before referral outcome is communicated - GPs are welcome to contact Tupu Ora should they have additional information following initial referral or if update is required.
During the referral and triaging process, the primary care provider should continue routine monitoring of physical and psychological wellbeing, and to seek urgent medical or mental health support if any concerns escalate.
